Practically Blogging

”Joe, what‘s up with the wisdom thing?”

I can’t believe how many have asked about Practically Wisdom.

”Joe, everything okay with you and the wife?”
”Joe, break more ribs?.”
”Joe, did you get voted off the island?”

For those of you who really care, I’m here to explain.
I think it all started with my broken ribs and then my February vacation. I was away from blogging and remembering how lazy I can be. Boy, I really enjoy vegetating in front of the television. There’s American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, How I met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, all the Law and Orders, The Red Sox, The Bruins, The Celtics, House, Desperate Housewives, Burn Notice, Saving Grace, Survivor, the ending of ER, the beginning of Southland, now I’m watching the new show called The Unusuals, then there’s the return of the most awesome Rescue Me, soon there will be So You Think You Can Dance and Big Brother … Well … I think you get the idea … and I’m sure I missed a few.

I have a few excuses to justify my sinking into laziness.
Let’s see … there’s my continuing 50 hour a week job, the blues and most importantly, my own practical wisdom while reflecting on the whole blogging idea.

To my non-blogging readers, I need you to know that blogging, at least the way I’ve been doing it, takes a lot of time and effort. Most of you are personal friends who know my sense of humor. Some of you find me witty, some of you find me quick witted, some of you find me clever and some find me corny or hilarious. There is also the chance that maybe this assessment is just me being delusional. Well … to sum that all up … you don’t blog but you read my posts.

To those of you who are bloggers … How do you friggin’ do it??? I admire every single one of you! From my short list of “Practically Friends” noted on my home page, to the 150 or so bloggers I subscribe to in my Google Reader and to the many commenters, commenting on other blogger’s posts I click to check out … who are you people and how do you friggin’ do it???

Do any of you work? Do you really have these kids and family members you write about?
How do you find the time? How can you be so funny all the time? WTF!!!

I started my blog because I like to make people smile and laugh. But, nobody is going to allow me the opportunity to make them smile or laugh if they don’t read what I write. Accomplishing this has been largely a time consuming ordeal. It was averaging about two hours putting together my post and about 52 hours trying to get people to read it.

For my non-blogging friends it hasn’t been too difficult. I send an e-mail or post a link on my Facebook page. Quick and easy, but I’m only reaching a small percentage of my readers. Note* … a small family and not many friends.

But you guys in cyberspace, geeeez, what a job it is to keep you coming back.
Fifty-two hours of work may be an exaggeration, but for someone like me with a full time job and all that TV to watch, it has really done a number on me.

I really, really love reading all your blogs. You are a talented bunch. I love commenting on your blogs, it not only gives me a chance to show you how delightfully witty I can be, but those comments I leave sometimes entices you to visit my blog and leave your own comments. As I’m sure it is for all of you when you receive comments, it is the greatest satisfaction for me, knowing you read my words. Each time I received a comment it made it all worth while.

I guess I grew tired but didn’t realize it until I was away convalescing with broken ribs and then when I was away on my February vacation. It was difficult for me to get back my rhythm, find my MoJo, my desire to dedicate the hours needed to continue my quest for being known throughout the humor-blogging community.

Yes, I’m still unsure of how I’ll continue from this point.
I very much miss being a part of it all.
Maybe I should just retire and make this a full time gig like I’m sure it is for all of you unbelievable bloggers.

26 wise cracks:

If I have to keep blogging then you do! There is no out!

Joe, let me say this - cut out the 52 hours of trying to advertise. If you are trying to make it into a second job, that's a hell of a way to do it. But it's much more enjoyable when you just write what you feel like writing, read/comment on blogs you truly enjoy, than making this huge commitment to read every blog out there, in hopes that they read you in return. It's supposed to be fun.

That being said, I hope you'll continue. I also hope you'll change the link for my blog in your list to Bacon Is My Lover. =D

Hello Joe, yes, I overdo it as well and it exhausts me and then I get really stressed if I have nothing to write about. I think I will adopt Heather's approach because she is spot on.

Joe, i sure do think of you as all of those MODEST compliments you bestowed on yourself. i really do miss hearing them in person too. as far as the Vegetating, you forgot the New Models

I agree with Heather, you need to blog for you. Wanting to have more readers is natural, but spending every waking moment trying to get them will drive you mad.

Hopefully you'll continue to write and many of us will continue to read. But if you decide not to write, then that's ok too if it's what makes you happy.

I can tell you Boston Sports has killed me blog too.

I hope you continue to write. I read all your posts even if I don't comment, just because I can't find anything witty enough to match your post.

And like Heather said, blog for you!! Even mundane everyday things sound nice when you read back on them yourself.

I was just thinking to myself that I haven't gotten a blog from you lately...With 2 new babies...never mind one of them being mine...I'm sure you'll have loads of wonderful stories to share...Just the other day, while Aubrey was in her high chair, I asked Mom how she fed Aubrey when she was a "baby, baby". It then dawned on me that they eat from bottles right?! This stuff WILL BE PRICELESS!!! MUAH

Just blog when you have the time and you have something you want to get out, funny or not.

We'll be there checking in and watching for the funny when it pops up. Hang in there....

Nice to see you, Joe! I like Mike's comment. I too am having a hard time keeping up. When I post, it takes me HOURS to get it just the way I want it. You'd never know it by reading the crap I write, but nevertheless, that's the way it is. I love blogging, but I love eating and having heat and it takes two jobs for me to do that. If you figure out a way to retire and do this full time, let me know, will ya?

I hope you still continue to write...even if it is just now and then. Better than nothing!

One of the handiest things I've found is a plugin for my wordpress blog. It posts a tweet for me whenever I make a new post. I also have Twitter and FB hooked so whenever I update Twitter, FB gets updated too. Therefore, whenever I make a post to WPress, twitter and FB are auto updated.

I have had trouble blooging too, but then I do my best thinking when I am out picking up manure, but with a broken leg (cause by a horse no less), I have practically been banned from the horse pasture, so have been relying on just what life tosses my way...

Hope it hasn't been too depressing (assuming you have been reading). For me, blogging is a way of just sharing life and what I'm learning with those willing to read...

Give up the tv, real people are way more intersting.

this show replaced my very favorite tv show.i dont watch many shows, maybe a few and when my favorite show is cancelled i find it impossible to watch the one that replaced it. hopefully you will find this wastes your time and you can do something more creative like Blogging

Blogging Without Obligation.

Cheers...and missed you!

Don't disappear like that again without at least hanging a sign saying "out for the season" or something...or or or ...um...else!

I knew it, I'm not alone. Thank God! Your blog is one of the first that I ever read. After some prodding from my wife, I started my own...after she did.
We both love your blog, and we both know how you feel.

Yes, I enjoy it and yet sometimes hate it. Yes, 99% of my stories are true. I do need to alter the events or people from time to time to protect the stupid.

Hang in there. It is just a funk. Believe me when I tell you, I have been there, and return often. If you think 1 blog is tough, try 2. Yes, I have 2...or 3. I forget.

You know, we do miss you...a LOT!

I could use a good laugh, Joe...

It doesn't have to be everything or nothing. Stop by to those blogs you like if you have the time; otherwise don't. Blog if you want to; otherwise don't. Nobody is grading you! That said, I've enjoyed our posts and comments as well. Hope you're having a good time in blog retirement...

Still missing you. And I am heading to Salem end of September. Ahem.

I admit, I'm clearly an exaggerating dimwit blogger. Do you still read your comments? Oh, about how we spend the time to blog...that's easy, just spill a beer on the white carpets. It's like an immediate bond. I'm excused immediately to enjoy the rest of my vices afterwords. Wanna know how I get out of eating deviled eggs? :)

yea...that made no drunken cents. uggh. Ill try again tomorrow.
